# Verify your identity

What you need to get verified on Sorbet, which documents are accepted, and how long it takes.

To open your accounts and move money with Sorbet, you need to complete identity verification — **KYC** if you're signing up as an individual, **KYB** if you're signing up as a business.

Verification is carried out for our regulated payment partners, who run the identity and sanctions checks required under anti-money-laundering rules. Identity checks are powered by **AiPrise**. You may see screens that aren't branded Sorbet during the process — that's expected.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Use a **real email address and a real phone number**. Both are required by the banks behind your account and are used as fraud signals. Shared, aliased or placeholder addresses will fail verification.
{% endhint %}

## Individuals (KYC)

### Who can apply

* You must be **18 to 65 years old** when you apply. Applicants over 65 can't be accepted.
* You can't be based in a [prohibited country](/sorbet/currencies-and-countries/supported-countries.md).

### What you'll need

**One form of ID**, in order of preference:

1. **Passport** — not accepted for US individuals
2. **National ID card** — not accepted for US individuals
3. **Another government-issued photo ID** (for example a driving licence) **plus your tax identification number**

**Plus:**

* Your personal details — full legal name, date of birth, nationality, country of residence, email and phone number
* A **live selfie**, always required, taken on your webcam or phone to match against your ID. Not a screenshot, not a photo of a photo, and not the picture from your ID
* Your **tax identification number** for your country of residence

| Country | Tax ID to provide |
| ------------- | ----------------- |
| Pakistan      | CNIC              |
| India         | PAN or Aadhaar    |
| United States | SSN               |
| Canada        | SIN               |
| Brazil        | CPF               |
| Mexico        | CURP              |
| Spain         | NIE or NIF        |
| Australia     | TFN               |
| Japan         | My Number         |

If your country isn't listed, use your national tax number. Where your country has no standard tax ID, you'll be asked to describe the document you provide.

### Proof of address — when it's needed

Most people won't be asked for this. It's required if you submit a government ID issued in a high-risk region but say you live somewhere else.

The document must:

* Confirm your current **residential** address
* Be addressed to you by name
* Have been issued in the **last 90 days**
* Not be a PO box or a virtual address

Accepted: bank statement, utility bill, government-issued letter, or a residential lease agreement. A lease can be older than 90 days as long as it's still current.

### Extra questions for some applicants

If you live in a [High-tier country](/sorbet/currencies-and-countries/supported-countries.md) — **Pakistan and the UAE are among them** — or you're **over 60**, you'll also be asked:

* What you're opening the account for (with an explanation if you choose "Other")
* Whether you're acting on behalf of someone else
* Your expected monthly payment volume
* Your employment status and most recent occupation
* Your source of funds

This is standard for these cases and isn't a sign anything's wrong. Answering fully the first time is the fastest route through.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Paying into India?** To use the Indian rupee VDA rail, you must submit **Aadhaar** as your ID and **PAN** as your tax number. Any other combination will verify your account but leave that rail closed.
{% endhint %}

## Businesses (KYB)

Every business application gets a manual review. Nothing here is decided automatically.

### What you'll need

* **Business formation document** — what counts depends on your entity type. A certificate or articles of incorporation for a company, a business licence or DBA filing for a sole proprietorship, a partnership agreement for a partnership, a trust deed for a trust
* **Ownership information** — a document accounting for **100%** of ownership, identifying every individual owning **25% or more**. A shareholder register, cap table, operating agreement or stock certificates all work. A cap table from Carta, AngelList or Securitize is accepted as-is; a self-made document needs signing by a verified control person, a lawyer, or a third-party CPA
* **Proof of address** for the operating address — bank statement, utility bill, government letter or lease, issued in the last 90 days, no PO boxes or virtual addresses
* **Proof of source of funds** — bank statements, investment documents, audited accounts, or evidence of an asset sale
* **Proof of nature of business** — invoices, commercial contracts, receipts, or bills of lading showing you actually do what you say you do
* **Business details** — tax ID, registration number, formation date, operating address, industry, estimated annual revenue, expected monthly payments, whether you conduct money services, whether you act as an intermediary, and any high-risk activities

In Pakistan your business tax number is your **NTN**.

### Written descriptions

Three answers must be written out in full, **between 200 and 1,000 characters each**:

1. **What your business does**
2. **Where your funds come from**
3. **What you'll use the account for**

If your business conducts money services, you'll also need to explain your compliance screening in the same length. Short or vague answers are the most common reason a business application is sent back.

{% hint style="info" %}
If the company is owned by another company, we'll need the same ownership documents for that entity too, until every chain resolves to named individuals.
{% endhint %}

### Owners, directors and signers

Every ultimate beneficial owner and control person completes individual verification, with the same documents as the KYC section above, **including a selfie and proof of address**. Each person must be marked as at least one of: **director**, **authorised signer**, or **person with control**, and needs a job title.

### Enhanced review

Some businesses go through a deeper review and will additionally be asked for a directors registry, a corporate ownership chart, and flow-of-funds diagrams. Financial institutions also need to supply an AML policy, proof of licensing, and a CV or LinkedIn profile for their Head of Compliance. Financial statements may be requested.

If your business conducts money services of any kind, a flow-of-funds document is required from the start.

### Who can't be verified

* **Businesses in restricted sectors**, including charities and NGOs — see [Restricted Businesses](/sorbet/currencies-and-countries/restricted-businesses-and-activities.md) for the full list and the activities you need to declare
* **Businesses incorporated, headquartered or operating in prohibited countries** — see [Supported Countries](/sorbet/currencies-and-countries/supported-countries.md)

## What happens after you submit

**Individuals** are usually approved within minutes. If you're in a High-tier country, expect up to a day.

**Businesses** take **3 to 4 business days**. If your business is based in a High-tier country — Pakistan included — allow **up to a week**.

| Status           | What it means                                                                     |
| ---------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Approved** | You're through. Head to Accounts to claim your details |
| **Under review** | Something needs a human. Common for businesses, and normal — no action needed yet |
| **Rejected** | Something specific was wrong. You'll be told what, and you can resubmit |

A rejection is almost never final. The usual causes are an unreadable photo, an expired ID, a selfie that doesn't match, a tax number in the wrong format, or a business description that's too short — all fixable. Correct what was flagged and submit again.

{% hint style="info" %}
Approved but a currency still isn't available? Occasionally a partner bank runs its own review of a new account, which can hold up one currency or rail for a short time while everything else works normally. It clears on its own.
{% endhint %}

## Getting your photos right

Most rejections are photo quality, not eligibility. Before you submit:

* Photograph the original document, not a photocopy, a screen, or a printout
* Get the whole document in frame, in focus, with no glare
* Include both sides where your ID has two
* Take the selfie live, facing the camera, with no hat, mask or sunglasses
* Don't use filters or edit the image
